15 years after the IOM's initial report on healthcare IT, a majority of hospitals have yet to implement CPOE, according to this year's survey by Modern Healthcare, which posed this question to readers: The Leapfrog Group has placed a priority on CPOE systems to prevent medication errors and alert doctors to adverse drug events when ordering. So while there's evidence of a significant increase in uptake and planning for CPOE, that measure of progress is tempered by the fact our survey did not define CPOE. Based on a comparison with other industry surveys, it would seem Modern Healthcare readers took a fairly broad view of what constitutes a CPOE implementation.
