In 2006, Who Patients for Patient Safety developed the London Declaration to advocate for safe health care worldwide.
In October 2004, the World Health Organization launched the World Alliance for Patient Safety, to facilitate the improvement of patient safety practices on a global level. The Alliance’s six action areas include healthcare associated infections, patient empowerment and involvement, the development of a patient safety taxonomy, research in the field of patient safety, solutions to reduce the risks of health care and reporting and learning to advance patient safety.
One of the six action areas of the World Alliance for Patient Safety is, “Patients for Patient Safety,” which is designed to ensure that patient organizations and individuals are involved in the work of the Alliance. The group Patients for Patient Safety consists of 24 consumers and patient safety advocates whose experience establishes them as patient safety champions.
Ryan Sidorchuk, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, is the Regional Patient Safety Champion for Canada for Patients for Patient Safety. In this capacity, he hopes to hear from patients and family members who have something to say on the issue of patient safety, from throughout Manitoba and Canada.
