Goals

  • Improve patient safety and reduce harm to patients from medication errors
  • Improve communication between health care providers
  • Eliminate the use specified dangerous abbreviations, symbols and dose designations in the following:
    • Hand printed orders and prescriptions
    • Medication Administration Records (MAR)
    • Preprinted orders and clinical pathways,
    • Electronic systems (e.g. order entry)
    • Electronic Medication Administration records
    • Automated dispensing cabinets.

Self Learning Package

Try our web-based professional development session. This session is entitled “Prescription for Safety: Medication Order Writing & the “Do Not Use” Abbreviation”.

The session can be used by educators in any group setting, or as an individual professional development learning opportunity. It has been designated as an accredited learning activity by the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association and may fulfill the requirements of the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba Continuing Competence Program. It will take approximately 45 minutes to complete not including your time to complete the self-assessment post test questions. The post test will not be forwarded to any organization.
