- Selkirk Mental Health Centre continues to use the Critical Incident Review process to enhance patient safety.
- Selkirk Mental Health Centre has begun an initiative of acknowledging patient safety tips or the identification of environmental hazards and risks by providing promotional items in response to the submission.
- During the 2006-07 fiscal year, Selkirk Mental Health Centre provided orientation to all new staff regarding the Critical Incident Review process and Achieving a No-Blame Culture. These two items will be part of the Annual Update for all program staff during the 2007-08 fiscal year.
- Selkirk Mental Health Centre’s Program Coordination Team received education from Health Canada’s Adverse Medication Reaction Reporting Program
- Selkirk Mental Health Centre provides patient safety information in its bi-monthly staff publication, the SMHC Bulletin.
- Selkirk Mental Health Centre enrolled in the It’s Safe to Ask campaign.
Infection Control
- Selkirk Mental Health Centre has a Centre-wide handwashing education campaign for staff and patients
- Selkirk Mental Health Centre now places waterless hand cleaner throughout the Centre, but includes alcohol-based hand cleaner in areas during an infection and where the product can be controlled.
- Selkirk Mental Health Centre is currently reviewing and updating all infection control policies.
- Where warranted, Selkirk Mental Health Centre completed pneumococcal vaccinations and tuberculosis screening of patients and staff immunization against Hepatitis B.
- Selkirk Mental Health Centre trialed and commenced the use of nitrite gloves.
Prevention of Adverse Drug Events
- Selkirk Mental Health Centre’s Program Coordination Team received education from Health Canada’s Adverse Medication Reaction Reporting Program.
- Selkirk Mental Health Centre is commencing its involvement in the medication reconciliation component of the Safer Healthcare Now! campaign.
- Selkirk Mental Health Centre continues to examine options in pharmacy medication distribution systems as part of the Centre’s redevelopment process.
- Selkirk Mental Health Centre participated in the ISMP’s Medication Safety Self-Assessment program.
- Selkirk Mental Health Centre continues to address the Required Organizational Practices of the Canadian Council of Health Services Accreditation (CCHSA).
Other
- Selkirk Mental Health Centre provides Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training to all staff, and includes ward rehearsals of actual events in its training.
- During 2006-07, Selkirk Mental Health Centre completed numerous pan-Canadian, environmental scans related to patient safety measures.
