Culture Of Safety Survey
Over the last few years, increased attention has been paid to the issue of patient safety climate in health care organizations. From 2005—2007, eight regional health authorities and three additional organizations have used the modified Stanford Culture of Safety Survey tool as part of a three year MIPS plan to support organizations in assessing their safety culture. Data has been collected from physicians, leaders and direct care staff in acute, community and long term care settings.
Review the report summarizing the 2005 surveys here. This data collection was a partnership between York University’s Dr Liane Ginsburg and colleagues and MIPS. See www.atkinson.yorku.ca/~safetyculture/ for the main and supplementary reports that present the 2006 data, which was generated as part of a research projected funded by the Canadian Patient Safety Institute. MIPS was a decision making partner in the 2006 study.

Culture of Survey administration is a required organizational practice for Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation Surveys in 2008. In Manitoba, a group of quality/patient safety leaders from participating regional health authorities are meeting to review the survey reports and are developing action plan for their organization based on the results.
This data collection was a partnership between York University and MIPS, and was funded in part by the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI).
This safety climate survey is important for promoting patient safety activities and directing change in health care. If you wish to learn more about where to access the survey, and how to carry out this type of research in your organization, please contact (204) 927-6477.
