MANITOBA INSTITUTE FOR PATIENT SAFETY WEBSITE LAUNCHED

Stakeholders Information Session announced,
Consultations to follow in Spring 2005

A website providing information about the Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety was launched today by Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety Chair Dr. Paul Thomas.

“We have been extremely pleased with the response the Institute has been receiving from Regional Health Authorities and other stakeholders,” said Dr. Thomas. “Over the next few months we will be building upon these partnerships and the website will play an important role in providing information about the Institute and its activities related to patient safety to a broader cross-section of stakeholders and the public.”

The website information will be regularly updated, making information on the Institute and patient safety accessible to Manitobans, particularly stakeholders who will, over time, be potentially impacted by the work of the Institute or become partners with the Institute in seeking to improve patient safety and quality health care in Manitoba. Links to local, national and international initiatives and research on matters involving patient safety will also be available.

Dr. Thomas noted that the Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety is currently in the final stages of preparing for a series of consultations with stakeholders that will help further define the Institute’s strategic directions for the future.

In advance of the consultations, the Institute will be offering a video-link information and orientation session to:

  • provide background on the events leading up to the establishment of the Institute;
  • acquaint stakeholders with the Institute and provide a context for the consultations slated to commence later in the spring of 2005; and,
  • further the process of networking with future Institute partners.

The orientation session will take place Monday, March 14, 2005 at 11:45 a.m. at more than twenty sites across Manitoba. Participants will include front line health care providers, boards, management and public representatives drawn from Regional Health Authorities and CancerCare Manitoba, as well as representatives from health care provider unions, professional regulatory associations, health educational programs/institutions, and First Nation communities.

The Institute today also released Moving Forward: Setting Strategic directions for 2005 and Beyond. Created to provide background on the Institute and its intended role, it will serve as a foundation for discussions with stakeholders during the consultation process. The document and a shorter companion piece are available on the Institute’s website.

The Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety is an independent non-profit organization created in 2004 by the provincial government in response to recommendations made by the Manitoba Patient Safety Steering Committee. The Institute’s role is to promote, coordinate and facilitate activities that have a positive impact on patient safety throughout Manitoba while enhancing the quality of health care for Manitobans.
