			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The public forum on Patient Safety: Let’s Talk About It was held in Newdale, Manitoba on October 13, 2011.  This forum was co-hosted by MIPS and the Manitoba Women’s Institute Southwest A Region.</p>
<p>Members of the MIPS Patient Advisory Committee (M-PAC) helped lead the small group discussions.</p>
<p>There were 65 participants. All participants agreed the forum was informative. They also agreed that they can use the knowledge they gained. Feedback indicated the forum was worthwhile, well organized and presented, and a great learning experience.</p>

<p>Invitations were sent to Deans/Directors in the healthcare professions in Manitoba, asking them to identify 5 individuals who approve or lead curriculum adjustments, and/or are responsible for faculty education/development and/or are healthcare educators. Eighty eight people registered for the event.</p>
<p>The program focused on the following:</p>

<li>Status of patient safety and patient harm in Canada and internationally and how this impacts health profession education programs</li>
<li>Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI) Safety Competencies</li>
<li>Update on upcoming event on curriculum mapping with CPSI Safety Competencies</li>
<li>Program example of integrating patient safety competencies into curricula by educators, illustrated by award-winning Patient Safety Modules</li>
<li>Launch of the Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety new case simulation tools</li>
<li>The use of simulation activities in clinical learning</li>
<li>Faculty development for patient safety and interprofessional practice</li>
<li>Panel discussions with interprofessional colleagues</li>
<li>Breakout discussions and networking opportunities</li>

<p>The day included tours of the Clinical Learning and Simulation Facility, and an opportunity to meet Dr. Ruby Grymonpre, a  key individuals addressing IPE in Manitoba and Dr. Laurel Taylor from the Canadian Patient Safety Institute, addressing Safety Competencies. Continuing Education Credits were available for physicians and pharmacists and others.</p>
