Leading Us To Excellence Award

2009

The 2009 Leading Us to Excellence Award was presented during Canadian Patient Safety Week November 2 – 6, 2009. A “good catch” is defined as an event or circumstance which has the potential to cause an incident or critical incident but the incident did not actually occur due to corrective action and/or timely intervention. It provides an opportunity to learn proactively from the experience. Organizations may also define these as near misses or close calls.

The 2009 recipient was the Biomedical Engineering Services Department, Brandon Regional Health Authority, submitted by Mr Gord McNamee, Manager. Mr NcNamee’s submission was entitled Improving Patient Safety By Biomedical Rounds, which outlined a good catch through proactively assessing potential patient safety issues which could have resulted in harm to patients from use of medical devices. See the following documents for further details: Biomedical Rounds Policy, Examples of patient safety issues, PowerPoint presentation.
