Dr. John Wade Research Award

At the AGM on November 4, 2005, the Board of MIPS announced the creation of the Dr. John Wade Research Award. Dr. John Wade was instrumental in the creation of the Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety and it was with honour that we established an award in his name to recognize local excellence in the important work of patient safety. The Dr. John Wade research award is a benefit for Premier Members.

At present, he is a Professor of Community Medicine and Anesthesia at the University of Manitoba; Dean Emeritus of the University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine; Vice-Chair on the Board of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority; and, Assistant Executive Director of the Manitoba Medical Services Foundation. In December, 2003, Dr. Wade was appointed as a member and chair of the Founding Board of the Canadian Patient Safety Institute. He is currently the Chair of the Board, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.

Dr. John Wade Research Award

The Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety (MIPS) is an independent, non-profit organization. The Institute’s role is to promote, coordinate and facilitate activities that have a positive impact on patient safety throughout Manitoba while enhancing the quality of health care for Manitobans.

The Dr. John Wade Research Award is offered as a benefit to Premier Members of MIPS.

This year the institute is pleased to announce that Manitoba Blue Cross agreed to sponsor this prestigious award for the next three years. This generous sponsorship allows MIPS to substantially increase the value of the Dr. John Wade award.

Andrew Yorke, President and CEO of Manitoba Blue Cross, told the institute:
“Proactive strategies in health care, including a focus on patient safety, are a natural extension of Manitoba Blue Cross’ position within the delivery of supplementary health benefits and its overall approach to wellness within Manitoba communities. The support of the Dr. John Wade Research Award delivers on Blue Cross’ position of caring within Manitoba. More than just a company, Blue Cross works hard to reflect the unique Manitoba spirit of caring and concern for others. Throughout his career, Dr. Wade lives this very message and Manitoba Blue Cross is proud to extend its support to further research in patient safety and honour Dr. Wade’s many contributions.”
