National Infection Control Week (October 19-23, 2009)

National Infection Control Week

October 19-23, 2009

The Power of One:
Your Role in Infection Control

The third week in October is designated as National Infection Control Week in Canada and the U.S. This year the Community and Hospital Infection Control Association (CHICA) Manitoba Chapter with the support of the Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety is encouraging all Manitobans to realize One Person Can Stop the Spread of Illness – YOU!

Each time one person cleans their hands, covers their cough or sneeze, or avoids unnecessary contact with others when they feel ill with cold or flu-like symptoms they participate in illness prevention. Whether they are in the hospital environment or in the community, the risk of infection transmission will be decreased through their action.

Now that is POWER - And it is in YOUR hands!!!

During National Infection Control Week and every week, YOU play an important role in preventing infection.

  • Clean your hands with soap and water or waterless hand rub
  • Cover your cough, preferably into your sleeve or a tissue - not into your hands
  • Consider Others
    • Stay home if you are sick
    • Limit unnecessary contact with others if you or they are unwell

You can help to make National Infection Control Week more successful by getting actively involved, displaying campaign material and spreading the word.

Clean your hands

Clean hands are the easiest and most effective way to prevent the spread of germs that cause infections.

There are two good ways to clean your hands;

  • Waterless alcohol-based hand rub -can be used when your hands are not visibly dirty.
  • Soap and water – can be used anytime you need to clean your hands

Remember:

  • Clean your hands often.
  • Always clean after touching your eyes, nose, mouth or secretions.

Clean hands can save lives!

Cover your cough

Be careful where you cough or sneeze to reduce the spread of respiratory illness

  • Cover your cough or sneeze with your sleeve or your elbow
  • Use a clean tissue to cover your cough or sneeze
  • Discard your tissue into the trash
  • Tell others to be careful where they cough or sneeze
  • Remember: clean your hands after you have handled a dirty tissue

Consider others

If you feel sick with cold or flu-like symptoms:

  • Stay home from work or school,
  • Avoid crowds and take care of yourself

If others are not feeling well, stay away from them if you can. Suggest they stay home while they are sick.

CHICA Manitoba and the Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety wish you a safe and healthy Infection Control Week!
