Canadian Safe Surgery Saves Lives Workshop

The Canadian “Safe Surgery Saves Lives” initiative will be publicly launched at a workshop in Toronto on March 3rd and 4th, 2009. Surgeons, Physicians, Nurses, Allied Health Professionals, Healthcare Leaders, Quality and Safety Specialists, and all others interested in the promotion and implementation of the Safe Surgery Checklist in Canada are invited to participate in this event that will feature:

  • Dr. Atul Gwande, Pediatric Surgeon and Lead for the World Health Organization Safe Surgery Saves Lives Initiative via live video broadcast;
  • Dr. Bryce Taylor, Surgeon-in-Chief & Director, Surgical Services, UHN Professor & Associate Chair, Department of Surgery, University of Toronto and lead for one eight World Health Organization Pilot Sites and;
  • Dr. Chris Hayes, Staff Physician, Medical Director, Quality & Patient Safety St. Michael’s Hospital Medical Officer, Canadian Patient Safety Medical officer
  • Members of the Canadian Safe Surgery Saves Lives Working Group.

The workshop will provide participants with insight into the development of the Safe Surgery Saves Lives Initiative and will introduce the adaptation of the World Health Organization (WHO) Checklist for Canada. Additionally speakers will provide guidance and support for introduction of the initiative within a local or regional context and share lessons learned from the WHO pilot phase. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide their comments to a panel of experts, and be engaged in discussions related to the practical aspects of implementation within various surgical settings.
