This year being the fifteenth (15) anniversary of the Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety (MIPS), we are very pleased to offer two Patient Safety Champion Awards. The recipients are Sarah Painter, Flight Nurse with Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service (STARS) and the team of Heather Purvis and Barbara Kitzan from CancerCare Manitoba (CCMB).
Examples of Sarah's commitment to safe care of patients in need of emergency evacuation include her collaborative care and team work. Sarah consistently engages with patients, always informing them of what is happening around them and providing reassurance, given the unfamiliar helicopter environment and specialized emergency care facing each patient. It was noted that she promotes a learning culture for team members and patients by challenging the status quo and encouraging people to speak up about patient safety. Sarah has taken it upon herself to pursue further education on patient safety to be able to apply the principles of patient safety with her colleagues and patients and become a leader in safe patient care.
Heather and Barbara are patient representative for CancerCare Manitoba (CCMB). They work as a team to support patients in their cancer care journey. Given the emotional impact of a cancer diagnosis, they provide reassurance and hands on help as needed to patients under stress. They act as liaisons between patients, their families and CCMB staff. They advocate as needed for the patient, identifying areas of concern, recommending modifications to existing programs and streamlining processes to improve quality of patient care. A patient testimonial gave high praise to the work being done by this team noting their "demonstration of holistic empathy and supreme listening skills". It has been stated that Heather and Barbara play a critical role in hearing the patient's voice and carrying those concerns forward to improve CCMB performance.
The Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety congratulates our 2019 Patient Safety Champion Award recipients and thanks them all for their focus on keeping patient's safe in the healthcare system.
The awards will be presented at our Annual General Meeting on November 6, 2019.
